Why would I make a test call?

If you have ever had any pain dealing with your microphone or speaker volume in a virtual meeting, this tip is for you. Many times, your dedicated hardware is your best option. But, what happens if it is not? Do you know what microphone and speaker options are currently available to you? Are you thinking about switching camera and microphone options? You may need to make a test call to find out.

The test call verifies you can connect to Teams to make a call in the same way as you would call into a meeting. It tests the selected audio devices and it shows you what you see on the camera.

Making a test call

At the current time, you must use the installed desktop client (the option doesn’t exist in the browser client).

  1. Click your picture in the top bar and select Settings
  2. Select Devices
  3. Make sure the correct audio devices are selected for the test
  4. Click Make a test call

Teams makes the test call to a bot.

How do bot calls work?

Bots are always ready to accept a call. The bot answers and allows you to record some words before playing the words back to you to check if the quality is acceptable.
